new tribute strawberry plants in stacking pots. they seemed expensive, but so far they work ok.

they were marked "as seen on tv," so i was skeptical. it claims to use water economically, but so far the top set of pots dries out just as quickly as any other pot. the lower levels might be keeping their moisture a bit longer.

i’ve planted about 16 plants in these pots. that’s probably crowding them a bit. we’ll see how well they produce.

*update* after a growing season. didn’t get as many strawberries from the plants in these pots as i would have liked. there seemed to be two main problems: (1) it can seem like the pots are watered enough when they aren’t. the top pot can be wet enough, but the bottom ones may be dried out. basically, they don’t seem to hold water much better than any other small pot. (2) the strawberries on the lower tiers seemed to get less sunlight.

overall verdict: even though our soil is terrible, adding potting soil to dirt in the ground has still beaten every strawberry pot idea i’ve tried so far.

This shot was taken in October, in Vancouver, on an indoor plant – a strawberry grown as a house plant.

Feat of photography it may not be, but a feat of gardening it is, if you consider that strawberries grow best outdoors and come into season in June!

So the occasion of this flower was really heartwarming, in defiance of the seasons. Go life, go!

This image also appears in the On the Vine group which is focused on collecting images of food growing, that might show how food that people love actually looks when it is growing. Anyone is invited to post images of healthy plants that are growing, flowering, or fruiting.

Day 172 – April 22, 2005: How about a trip down memory lane? See notes on photo above for my witty thoughts on growing up in the ‘hood.’

Went for Lunch with my good friend Leila today and I left my camera at home. I walked around downtown for a while before meeting up with Claire and saw many things to shoot…. alas…. at home. Sigh.
